So Ready for a Happier Year: 2021 Happier Place Calendar

2021 Happier Place calendar, nature photography, beach to canyons, words of inspiration

The limited edition 2021 Happier Place Monthly Wall Calendar is here! Wishing you a healthy, happier year with 13 beautiful nature photos, words of inspiration, and lots of holidays and occasions for joy and appreciation.

2021 Happier Place Calendar Dates

Just like last year’s calendar, the 2021 Happier Place Calendar marks not only the usual US American federal holidays (e.g., 4th of July, Labor Day), important dates of remembrance (e.g., Juneteenth), the common Western holidays (e.g., Christmas, Hanukkah), and some popular fun days (e.g., April Fools).

We’ve also included other special days: to open all of our minds to other cultures by honoring more international holidays (e.g., Holi, Eid ul-Fitr, Lunar New Year), to draw attention and inspire action on some UN days (e.g., Peace Day, Earth Day, World Wildlife Day), and to inspire even more shared fun on classic and newer Fun Days (e.g., Pi Day, May The Fourth). And of course, you’ll be reminded to celebrate International Day of Happiness on March 20, 2021.

Side Note: First Day of the Week

One more note on dates: Every year, there is that moment of hesitation if we should follow the American structure of starting each week with Sunday, instead of starting them with Monday as it’s done on calendars in Europe, Australia and parts of Asia. After all, Saturday and Sunday are called the weekEND, which would make Monday the beginning of the week. And that is in fact officially the international standard ISO 8601.

But since most of the visitors to our website live in North America, we chose the “week starts on Sunday” set-up again. Want to nerd out more? Here’s a world map indicating the first day of the week in different countries. Turns out there are a few countries that start the week on Saturdays.

By the way, we really couldn’t find a convincing reason why the calendar week starts with Sunday in the Americas (and some other parts of Asia and Africa) except that it may be for ancient religious reasons, since it’s common in the Judaic, Islamic, and some Christian traditions.

Each month takes you to a different place in nature. For the 2021 Nature Photography Calendar, we focused a little more on big open spaces and places that give you a longer view or evoke motion. In 2020, due to the pandemic, we’ve probably all felt a bit more cooped up and restricted. We’ve also appreciated even more time spent in the “Great Outdoors” where we feel like we could breath more freely. So in 2021, we wanted to give you lots of images that would let your mind wander into an open space beyond your four walls. And if possible, we hope the photos will inspire you to get outside and get some actual fresh air and sunshine.

The only exception is the close-up photo of the wild flax. We chose this photo for May, the Mother’s Day month, because the photo is Luci’s mother’s favorite. We hope that getting close to these flowers will inspire calm and also appreciation for the little wonders of nature and for our mothers and anyone else who introduced us to the wonders of nature and the happier-making escape the outdoors can provide. Danke, Mami!

All photos were taken by Luci Westphal. The 2021 calendar photos features images from the Poudre Canyon, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Fort Collins, and the Cache la Poudre River in Colorado, from the Everglades National Park, Honeymoon Island (cover photo), and Key West in Florida, from the Chattahoochee National Forest and Minnehaha Falls in Georgia, Double Arch in Arches National Park in Utah, wild flax in Germany, and a cove along the Algarve coast in Portugal.
